Each year, App State awards more than $4 million to students based on need and academic achievement to help make education even more affordable for all students. Department Undergraduate Scholarships

Bill Hubbard Memorial Scholarship in Biology Endowment

Established in honor of Dr. Williams "Bill" Hubbard, a former faculty member, the Hubbard scholarship provides an award for an upper-level student who intends to enter a health profession.

Biology Alumni and Faculty Emeriti Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to intended or declared biology majors who are full-time students and who maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is renewable for up to 4 years, provided that the recipient continues to meet these criteria.

Dr. Carolyn H. Hampton Research Scholarship for Biology

This scholarship is intended to support undergraduate biology majors involved in worthy research projects/activities that are approved by the chair of the biology department or the chair's designee.

Dr. F. Ray Derrick Endowed Biology Scholarship

Established by Carolyn Hampton, former student, in honor of F. Ray Derrick, this award provides scholarships for qualified biology majors. Applicants should be full-time students with a minimum 3.0 GPA who are residents of North Carolina. Preference will be given to students with financial need. This scholarship is renewable based on verification of satisfactory academic performance.

Dr. Janet E. Hohn Excellence In Biology Endowed Scholarship

Established by Dr. Janet E. Hohn, this scholarship is awarded to juniors or seniors majoring in the Department of Biology. Qualifications: financial need; special consideration to students from underrepresented populations in the field of biology. Scholarship is not renewable.

Dr. Kevin Bell Memorial Endowed Optometry Scholarship

Originally established by the late Dr. Kevin Bell, in support of students interested in Optometry. The scholarship was renamed to honor Bell in 2011. Qualifications: Undergraduate seniors preparing for a career in Optometry.

Ida Belle Ledbetter Memorial Scholarship in Biology Endowment

Established by Ms. Ida Belle Ledbetter, former faculty member, the Ledbetter Scholarship provides scholarships for qualified biology majors with financial need. Preference may be given to students from Northwestern North Carolina.

Joseph H. and Eileen K. Elrod Endowment for Biology Income Scholarship

Established by Joseph H. and Eileen K. Elrod, this award provides scholarship support to a rising sophomore, junior or senior majoring in Biology. Recipient must be a resident of North Carolina and demonstrate financial need. Preference shall be given to students who are residents of northwestern North Carolina. This scholarship is renewable, provided the student continues to meet the criteria.

Lloyd L. Hobbs Memorial Scholarship for the Physical Sciences

Established by Mrs. Ella T. Hobbs and the Appalachian State University Foundation, Inc. in honor of her husband, this award provides scholarships for need-based students who are juniors or seniors in the physical sciences within the College of Arts and Sciences. Scholarships are renewable based on maintenance of a GPA of 3.0 or higher. 

Mitchell D. Hoyl/Paul A. Patacchiola Scholarship in Biology

Qualifications: Applicants must be either a graduate of an accredited high school, entering college for the first time and accepted for admission to Appalachian, or a current undergraduate or graduate student at the University. Applicants must be fulltime students majoring in Biology with a specialization in Ecology and Environmental Biology or Teaching. Applicants must show proof of their North Carolina ancestry, having a progenitor established in North Carolina no later than 1860. In the event that no such recipient can be identified, the award may be extended to applicants having a progenitor established in South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, or Mississippi no later than 1860. This scholarship is renewable based on verification of satisfactory academic progress.

This scholarship is provided to support specific field trip expenses related to undergraduate biology research. You can apply here.

Outside Scholarship Opportunities

The Udall Foundation awards $5,000 scholarships to sophomore and junior undergraduates with a demonstrated commitment to solving environmental issues through policy, science (hard and soft), engineering, architecture, economics, the arts or any other discipline. Udall Scholars also get to attend the Scholar Orientation in August and are immediately plugged into a growing and active alumni network.

Department Graduate Scholarships

Gary Walker Outstanding Graduate Student in Biology Award

This annual award, founded in 2012, was established to recognize one outstanding graduate student in Biology based on measures of service, teaching and research. The award was formed in Walker's name for over 25 years of commitment and service to the graduate degree program as the Biology Department Graduate Program Director. Wayne R. Richardson Memorial Graduate Fellowship for Biology

This annual award was established by family, friends, and admirers of Dr. Wayne R. Richardson. This award goes to a full-time Biology graduate student.
