Seminar: Saving an American treasure: restoration ecology of the Apalachicola river

Saving an American treasure: restoration ecology of the Apalachicola river
Presenter:
Dr. Michael Gangloff
Associate Professor, Appalachian State University
Date:
Friday, November 10, 2023

Dr. Gangloff has been working on (and in) the Apalachicola River Basin since 1999. One of the truly 'last best places' the Apalachicola River and its floodplain are among the largest contiguous wetland complexes in the southeastern US. The river is home to a wide range of endangered species and is a critical supplier of freshwater to Apalachicola Bay, the most important commercial oyster fishery in the Gulf of Mexico. Like nearly all rivers today the Apalachicola faces a wide range of stressors but a diverse group of stakeholders are working to mitigate these threats and restore functionality of this ecologically and economically important ecosystem.
