Biology Greenhouse

Welcome to the Biology Greenhouse

Appalachian State University's Biology Greenhouse and its staff support a variety of outreach, education, and research programs, while also providing opportunities for hands-on experimental learning. We welcome research projects, class experiments, community tours, and volunteers of any experience level.

Our collection hosts more than 1,200 taxa across more than 100 families, with representation from every continent except for Antarctica.

The Greenhouse is a great place to explore year-round, offering a warm and welcoming space filled with a diverse collection of plants. Visitors can discover everything from lush tropicals and striking succulents to North Carolina native perennials and fascinating carnivorous plants. There’s always something new to see — different species peak or bloom at various times of the year, so each visit offers a new experience!
