Wildlands Engineering, Inc. is seeking motivated individuals to join our Charlotte and Raleigh offices. Duties of the Environmental Scientist will include performing stream and general ecological assessments, geomorphic surveys, wetland delineation, endangered and threatened species surveys, vegetation inventory, environmental permit applications, and technical report preparation. Assessment activities involve promoting the long-term ecological health of project sites necessary to support project success and ecological design. Work relates to stream and plant surveys, data processing and organizing, report preparation and writing, meeting deadlines in a fast-paced work environment, and communicating site assessment results with team members. The Environmental Scientist’s role will involve both onsite field work and office work. The Environmental Scientist will also be responsible for monitoring and documenting current conditions on sites and working collaboratively across restoration project teams.

Key Responsibilities 

• Perform stream and general ecological assessments to ensure the long-term ecological health of project sites
necessary to support project success and ecological design
• Perform geomorphic surveys on existing and restored streams
• Perform vegetation surveys on restored sites
• Create GIS maps for restoration sites
• Process field data and organize data for annual reports
• Conduct threatened and endangered species surveys
• Effectively communicate and coordinate with team members, and other staff
• Meet multiple deadlines with a willingness to react positively to changes in priorities

Qualifications

• 1 to 3 years of experience related to the key responsibilities and requirements of the job
• A four-year degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, geography, or other related field
• Understanding of ecological processes important to riparian and wetland restoration in the southeastern United
States
• Southeastern native and invasive plant identification skills
• GIS proficiency
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office
• Ability to adhere to company safety policy and OSHA safety procedures

Preferred Qualifications

• Field monitoring practices including stream surveying, vegetation sampling, soil sampling, pebble counts, and
stream morphology assessments
• Experience delineating stream and wetlands
• Technical writing experience
• Threatened and endangered species survey experience
• Experience interfacing with landowners and agency officials

Physical Demands

• Ability to frequently walk over rough, uneven surfaces
• Ability to sustain periods of strenuous physical exertion
• Ability to lift to 50 pounds
• Ability to work independently in an outdoor setting
• The requirements of the job and the physical demands are performed in outdoor weather conditions with frequent
exposure to wet/humid conditions and extreme heat or cold. Other adverse factors may include exposure to ticks
and poison ivy.
